Volunteer Spotlight: Carrie Guerrette

A TV news report about Camp Blue Skies piqued Carrie Guerrette’s interest. Even though she lived in Southport, NC, about four hours away, she was looking for ways to give back and connect with others.

When she researched our camps, she saw a call for volunteers. “I always loved the idea of camp when I was younger but never had the opportunity to go,” Carrie said. “So, I thought this would be a great way to experience camp and help others in need.”

How many times have you volunteered?

“After my first camp experience, I was hooked. I have been volunteering since March 2016 and have volunteered at both sessions at Camp Twin Lakes in GA, Camp Harrison in NC, and Camp Thunderbird in SC. I participated in the virtual camps when we could not meet in person due to Covid-19.”

What’s the biggest lesson that camp has taught you?

“I had limited experience working with adults of varying intellectual and developmental disabilities and did not know what to expect. I appreciate how the campers are willing to try almost anything when faced with challenges at camp and daily life. Even small accomplishments are a reason to celebrate. Campers have taught me to be braver in trying new things and enjoy moments in life, no matter how big or small.”

What is your favorite part of camp?

“I love getting to know the campers and enjoying their accomplishments and growth over time. At this point, I probably get as excited about returning to camp as most campers do.”

What’s your favorite camp memory?

“I fondly look back to my first camp experience, and how impressed I was with all the support and camaraderie campers and volunteers have for one another. Also, the unexpected and fearless talent in the Variety Show and Karaoke Night continues to amaze me.”
